As a general member of the CAVFD, you are entitled to a great number of benefits and opportunities, such as:

  • Free training from the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute
  • Unparalelled experience at one of the busiest firehouses in the DC metro area
  • Retirement pay after 20 years of service with the LOSAP program
  • A 3500 dollar Maryland tax break after three years of service
  • State-sponsored tuition reimbursement (more info in the Live-In section)
  • With experience comes opportunities to take a leadership role in the department
  • Comraderie within the department is superior to anywhere else
  • A great working relationship with the career personnel in the station
  • Free uniforms including duty shirts, pants, and belt
  • Computers and broadband internet access available for all members

General members are asked to come by and ride whenever they have time to spare. In addition, they may be asked (but not forced) to ride when staffing is low, such as if a couple of live in members are out of town, or on holidays.

We request (but not require) that our general members sleep in at the firehouse at least 1 - 2 nights per month. However, we realize that this is a volunteer organization, and some members will have other obligations or committments that may prevent them from doing so.

Members are required to be in attendance for the monthly company business meeting, which is on the third Tuesday of every month. They are also asked to try and come by the station for drill nights, which are at 1900 hours on Tuesday nights (except on our meeting night). Again, we understand that general members may not be able to attent drill nights every week, but at least one drill per month is expected.
